The Problem
When I started my contract role for Spectrum Enterprise, I was immediately presented with a problem. There were a lot of discrepancies between the various employees of Spectrum Enterprise. Due to the size of the company, the experience levels of new employees, and the numerous departments, it became clear that there needed to be a way to onboard new hires. The goal was to create a course that would be a successful follow-up to the mandatory “Welcome to Charter Communications” training and that preceded any specific departmental training for each employee.
The Solution
The Spectrum Enterprise New Employee Orientation needed to be updated to provide a single onboarding course for all new hires and it also needed to represent the new employer brand. After diving into the plethora of new branding resources and the numerous departments within Spectrum Enterprise, I was able able to create a 30-minute e-learning course that is now in rotation for all new employees in the learning management system.
My Process
First, I identified the primary learning goal and my target audience. Going into this project, I was asked to include (but I was not limited) a “Welcome to Spectrum Enterprise” introduction video, a section outlining the internal brand communication and external brand campaign, an overview of the products sold and the industries served. The task was simple enough, but with pushback from human resources business partners, the process did end up taking longer than anticipated.
I actually ended up making three iterations of the “Welcome to Spectrum Enterprise” introductory that was supposed to begin the course. All versions were made on Vyond. The first iteration was more animation-heavy. The second was a more stripped down version of the first, after HRBP feedback. The third was more on brand for the company, featuring stock videos and motion graphics. Feel free to explore all three versions. I let the company choose which of the videos they preferred.
I had to be selective about the content that would be included in the course. One of the challenges that I faced was conflicting feedback between different reviewers. What the brand SME preferred ended up conflicting with the HRBPs. I had to make the final design decision as the project manager of this project, which meant things like shortening the product information section by 50% or collaborating with our in-house graphic designer to create an infographic instead of just listing information. The project in its entirety took over 5 months to see through to completion.
Takeaways
My biggest takeaway from this project is to go into every project expecting it to get ripped apart. I received a lot of valuable feedback from the SMEs on this project. I also got feedback that revolved around personal preferences. Learning how to parse through all types of feedback and learning how to trust myself as the instructional designer on a project was a critical experience that I needed to help me master my craft.
